Goal: Practice sentences that use a blend of the present indicative and the imperfect subjunctive.

As a non-native advanced Spanish speaker myself, I still struggle with the subjunctive. I have to pause and think in order to identify and then formulate a subjunctive sentence. So, let's practice!

Let's focus on emotional responses and wishes in the present (WEIRDO) related to actions in the past:

  • I'm glad he was there.

    • Me alegra que él estuviera.

  • I wish they wouldn't have said my name.

    • Espero que no hubiera dicho mi nombre.

  • I can't believe she would do that!

    • No puedo creer que ¡ella lo hiciera!

Every day, think of something that follows one of those patterns for practice material. Doordash was quick? You're glad they arrived quickly! Something embarrassing happened? You wish it had not happened! Were you surprised by something? You can't believe it happened!

Below are some resources to help you practice the imperfect subjunctive.

  1. StudySpanish.com has simple explanations, plenty of examples, and quizzes. It's the website I used the most when I returned to studying Spanish as an adult.
